Why meta tags matter for SEO and social sharing

Meta tags are snippets of HTML that live inside the <head> section of your page. Search engines and social platforms read them to understand what your page is about — and to decide how to display it when someone shares or finds your content.

The title tag

The <title> tag is the single most important on-page SEO element. It appears as the clickable blue headline in Google search results. Keep it between 30 and 60 characters. Shorter and you are missing an opportunity; longer and Google will cut it off mid-word, creating an ugly ellipsis that hurts click-through rate.

Google measures title length in pixels, not characters, because different letters have different widths. The tool above approximates this using an average character width. For the most accurate result, test your actual page using the URL Checker.

Meta description best practices

The meta description appears below the title in search results. It does not directly influence rankings, but it heavily influences whether someone clicks your result. A compelling description that matches search intent can double your click-through rate compared to a generic one. Target 70–160 characters. Google will rewrite descriptions it deems unhelpful, so write for users, not bots.

Open Graph tags explained

Open Graph (OG) tags were created by Facebook and are now used by LinkedIn, Slack, and most messaging apps to generate link previews. The three essential OG tags are og:title, og:description, and og:image. Without them, platforms will guess — and the results are usually ugly.

The og:image is the most impactful. Use an image at least 1200 × 630 pixels. Images smaller than 600 × 315 may not display at all on Facebook. Make the image meaningful and readable even at thumbnail size.

Twitter Card types

X (formerly Twitter) uses its own card system alongside Open Graph. The twitter:card tag can be set to summary (small square image) or summary_large_image (large banner image). The latter is almost always better for content marketing because it dominates the feed. If you omit twitter-specific tags, Twitter falls back to the OG equivalents.

Common meta tag mistakes

The most common mistake is having duplicate title tags across multiple pages. Every page should have a unique, descriptive title. The second most common error is copying the same description to every page — search engines treat this as a signal that your content is thin or templated.

Another frequent issue is forgetting the canonical URL. If your page is accessible at multiple URLs (with and without trailing slash, with www and without), you need a canonical tag to tell search engines which version to index.

How Google renders titles vs what you set

Google does not always use the title you set. If it determines that your title does not match the page content or search intent, it may rewrite it using text from your headings or body copy. To minimize rewrites: keep your title descriptive and accurate, match it to your H1 heading, and avoid keyword stuffing. The URL Checker tool on this site will show you what your current title tag says — but only Google can tell you what it will actually display.

Frequently asked questions

Do meta keywords still matter?

No. Google has ignored the meta keywords tag since 2009. Bing and other major search engines followed. You can include them if you want, but they will have zero effect on rankings and add unnecessary page weight.

How long does it take for meta tag changes to appear in Google?

Google typically re-crawls pages within a few days to a few weeks, depending on how often your site is updated and how authoritative it is. You can request a re-crawl via Google Search Console to speed things up.

Can I have different OG title and page title?

Yes, and sometimes it makes sense. Your page title is optimized for search engines and should be concise. Your OG title can be longer and more conversational since it will be displayed on social platforms where SEO truncation rules do not apply.

What is the best og:image size?

Use 1200 × 630 pixels at minimum. This displays well on all major platforms. For Twitter summary_large_image cards, 1200 × 628 is the ideal ratio. Keep the file size under 1MB and use JPEG or PNG.

Does meta description affect SEO ranking?

Not directly. Google confirmed that meta descriptions are not a ranking factor. However, a compelling description improves click-through rate, which sends positive behavioral signals to Google and can indirectly improve your ranking over time.
