Optimal title and description lengths for 2026

Google does not actually measure your title by character count — it measures by pixel width. A title full of wide characters like "W" and "M" will be truncated earlier than one filled with narrow characters like "i" and "l". The practical rule of thumb remains 50–60 characters, which keeps most titles safely under the 580-pixel threshold Google uses.

How Google measures pixel width, not characters

Google renders titles using a proportional font (a variant of Arial/Helvetica at around 18–20 pixels). Because letters have different widths, the same character count can produce very different visible lengths. The character counter above approximates pixel width at 8 pixels per character on average, which is a reasonable heuristic for planning.

If precision matters, use the URL Checker to verify the actual display on your live page. Alternatively, preview your title in Google Search Console's URL Inspection tool, which shows rendered snippets.

Mobile vs desktop truncation differences

Desktop Google results truncate titles at approximately 580 pixels. Mobile results have a slightly narrower viewport and may truncate earlier — sometimes as few as 50 characters. Since mobile now accounts for the majority of Google searches, optimizing for the mobile limit (around 55 characters) is safer than targeting the desktop maximum.

Meta descriptions behave similarly. On desktop, Google shows up to about 160 characters. On mobile, you may see as few as 130 characters before truncation. Writing your most important content within the first 120 characters ensures it survives on all screen sizes.

A/B testing titles for CTR

Google's Search Console shows click-through rate (CTR) per page and query. Use this data to identify pages with impressions but low CTR — these are candidates for title and description testing. Change only one element at a time, wait two to four weeks for statistically meaningful data, then compare. Even small CTR improvements on high-traffic pages can significantly increase organic visits.

FAQ

What happens if my title is too long?

Google truncates the title and adds an ellipsis. The truncation point is unpredictable — it may cut off mid-word. More importantly, the truncated portion often contains the most descriptive part of the title, which can hurt click-through rate.

Does a short title hurt SEO?

Very short titles (under 20 characters) signal to Google that the page may lack sufficient content. While they are not penalized directly, they represent a missed opportunity to include relevant keywords and descriptive language. Aim for at least 30 characters.

Is there a minimum length for meta descriptions?

Google does not enforce a minimum, but descriptions shorter than 70 characters rarely provide enough context to convince a user to click. Treat the description as a tiny advertisement for your page content — give it enough room to make a compelling case.

Does description length affect ranking?

Description length is not a ranking factor. Google ignores the description tag for ranking purposes. However, length affects readability and perceived quality, which indirectly influence click-through rate — which does send behavioral signals that correlate with ranking.
